Oil Painting Still Life with Dale Livezey

Using still life, Dale will provide a basic background regarding the use of oil paints. The five-session class is hands-on with individualized and informal instruction including demonstrations, discussions and studio painting time. Dale Livezey’s haunting landscapes are well-known in the Helena area and the northwest. Taking inspiration from the long shadows during the twilight hours, he paints with oils, creating works with depth and luminosity. Dale has been painting since he was a boy.

Sewing Circle: Blossoms with Artist-in-Residence Marie Watt

The blossoms in Marie Watt’s artwork are meant to invoke memory of lives lost in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to date. Borrowing from the name of forget-me-not flowers, and using wool fabric, participants will make blossoms that will become a symbol of the lives lost in Iraq, of those we remember, our own loved ones, and our own stories. This event is open to all ages and requires no experience. Come join the sewing circle on a drop-in basis, enjoy snacks, talk with the artist and create blossoms that will be added to the Forget-me-not: Blossoms exhibit in the Holter’s High Gallery.

Marie Watt is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Portland, OR. She was born to the son of Wyoming ranchers and a daughter of the Turtle Clan of the Seneca Nation (Iroquois/Haudenosaunee). She identifies herself as “half Cowboy and half Indian.”

Storytelling with Soft Sculpture

Teachers will work with visiting artist Marie Watt to create a fabric-based sculpture inspired by a memory or experience. Marie’s mother Romayne Watt (Seneca), a Native American education specialist will lead a storytelling circle to set the stage for the day’s activities. Marie Watt is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Portland, OR. Participants will tell stories inspired by an object or memory and create a three dimensional soft-sculpture using recycled wool blankets, needle and thread, as well as remnants of fabric from home. Teachers will find the activities applicable to the classroom.

Join our guest Turkish calligrapher and ebru maker at a special celebration of Turkish food, music and hospitality. Nibble on complimentary Turkish meze prepared by Helena’s own Ersun Ozer of the Mediterranean Grill, listen to the exquisite sounds of the oud, the Turkish lute, played by Bruce Siegmund and Timbaru, enjoy the rhythms of Turkish dance and dabble with marbled paper and calligraphy.

Giant puppets, international artists, thought-provoking conversations, the desire to learn new media… all these and much more attract people of all ages to education events at the Holter Museum. Each season, the Education department offers workshops, artists’ presentations, and hands-on activities that deepen visitors’ engagement with the ever-changing display of visual art. We know that people of all ages learn through making visual art as well as seeing and hearing about it. Involvement with art develops creative thinking skills, strengthens our ability to solve problems, and enhances our appreciation of our own and other cultures. As a regional leader in the field of art education, the museum partners with other organizations to provide programs for school and college students, families, adults, accomplished and aspiring artists. Artist-in-Residence Corwin (Corky) Clairmont

Corky Clairmont, a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, is an accomplished print-maker and conceptual artist. The recipient of the 2008 Montana Governor’s Award in the Arts, Clairmont is an immensely gifted leader and educator in the Salish and Kootenai community. He will be speaking about his current exhibition Welcome to the Rez as well as other aspects of his work as an artist, teacher and community leader.
Cultural Crossroads Artist Residency Program at the Holter Museum is an opportunity to explore the importance of international cultural influences shaping contemporary art. Through raising awareness of how artists and audiences participate in the complex web of culture, the program encourages visitors to appreciate creativity, diversity and collaboration. The residencies offer tours and opportunities for class groups to meet and work with the visiting artist.
We are pleased to announce that the National Endowment for the Arts awarded the Holter Museum of Art a grant for $55,000 in support of the Cultural Crossroads program for 2008-2010. NEA has been a key supporter since the inception of the Holter’s Cultural Crossroad Artist Residency program and is supporting the program for the fifth time.

Burcu Kinay & Murat Cabuk
Burcu Kinay was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1983. She took lessons in ebru (marbling) from her master Ayla Makas for 2 years in Caferaga Medresesi which is an historical training place for Turkish arts.
Murat Cabu
k was born in 1978 in Turkey. He graduated in Economics from Black Sea Technical University in Turkey. He is a web application developer as well as a calligraphist.

This class is designed for people who want to expand their basic watercolor skills. Intermediate students will advance their understanding of color theory and design principles. Subjects covered will include landscape, still life and the figure. There will be an emphasis on realistic depiction of objects and spatial relationships including ways of depicting shadows and shading. Carol Montgomery has a BFA in painting from the University of Montana, Missoula. While attending there she fell in love with printmaking, specifically collagraphy with Don Bunse. She subsequently went to the San Francisco Art Institute and earned her MFA in Printmaking. She primarily does printmaking, currently relief forms. She likes to teach because it’s fun to meet new people and do art with them!
