in the Bair Gallery
January 25 - April 15
As an educator, curator, and artist, George Longfish has made significant contributions to the identity and visibility of the contemporary Native American art movement. Known for his mixed media paintings, Longfish often uses humor and irony to address the issues of decolonization and Native American identity. This traveling exhibition, spanning Longfish’s 35-year career, originates from the Montana Museum of Art and Culture and travels under the auspices of the Montana Museum and Art Gallery Directors Association.

Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate
in the Sherman and Millikan Galleries
January 25 - April 15
Seeking to promote arts-based civic dialogue, the Holter Museum of Art invited artists to reflect upon, respond to, or transform white supremacist hate propaganda published by the World Church of the Creator and acquired by the Museum’s project partner, the Montana Human Rights Network. More than one hundred artists from coast to coast—working as individuals and as teams—responded to the Museum’s call for entry in astonishing ways, using a wide range of media: sculpture, video, painting, photography, collage, printmaking, mixed media, book arts, beadwork, fiber, installation, and performance. The startling and moving result, Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate, will travel throughout Montana after the exhibition closes in Helena.

Gary Horinek: Mentor
in the High Gallery
Installation March 2 - March 30
Exhibition April 4 - June 14

Installation artist and farmer, Gary Horinek creates a dramatic and interactive faux landscape in the High Gallery. Growing up along the Montana Hi-Line near Hingham, Horinek spent his childhood exploring the dried up river beds, the sprouting sage, and linear fault lines of the land while digging for fossils and searching for a story in the soil of a time long ago. In this installation, Horinek recreates this place from his childhood, calling on the landscape as mentor and using specific objects as metaphors to tell a fragmented story of what ultimately is a story of self. Horinek will build the installation in the High Gallery throughout the month of March—visitors are welcome to come watch his world unfold.

Christiane Buell: Transcontinental Vision
in the Artworks Gallery

Reception: Friday, April 4, 6-8 pm
Christiane Buell, born in Zurich, Switzerland, is a graduate of the California College of Arts & Crafts. She has lived in the Helena area since her residency at the Montana Artists Refuge. Buell’s oil paintings, developed through a process of layering, sanding, over-painting, and scraping, achieve a lyrical response to the natural environment.
