Join us Friday, July 26th for the opening reception of Understory/Overstory by Cathy Weber.
on view in the High Gallery : July 5th - December 30th
Understory/Overstory at the Holter Museum is the artist’s second iteration of this large-scale sculptural installation. This site-specific installation is the culmination of a three-year project that integrates more than a thousand black birds with quaking aspen deadfall recovered from Weber’s property along the Grasshopper creek in southwestern Montana.
The title refers to the ecological relationship between upper and lower forest vegetation that expresses the diversity, composition, and structure of the ecosystem. Understory is the area of growth beneath the canopy, while overstory is the upper crown cover. These terms also evoke narratives that are hidden and those that are revealed.
