Lunar New Year Family Day: The Fire Rooster

Sun. Jan. 29th
Noon-3pm
FREE for all ages

It’s the Year of the Fire Rooster! Filled with myth and tradition, the Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in many Asian countries. Roosters are hard-working, talented and capable, but that doesn't mean they don't have a sense of adventure! You will often find roosters travelling the world to seek new experiences, and they will be the ones who get up early to greet the sun, too. Roosters are quite self-sufficient and self-confident and are likely to start trends; they certainly don't need to rely on others for their opinions and are happy to stick their neck out if necessary. They like to dress up!. Join us for an afternoon of Asian culture, treats and traditional Lunar New Year activities.

Modernism in Montana with Steve Gluekert
Over Our Shoulders:

Looking Back, Twenty artists working in Montana 1810-1945
Saturday, Feb 11, 2017
10:30 am @ the Holter Museum

Often when artists speak about MT art history two schools of thought emerge. The first and most dominant is rooted in the story of the heroic Charlie Russell and western romanticism. The second story begins with the GI Bill, modernism and the founding of the Archie Bray Foundation, and the influence of the Poindexter Collection.

For the purposes of this talk, and in an attempt to highlight a more complete history of artists in MT, Steve will ignore both of these paths, and working backwards, will look at 20 men and women who have worked diligently as artists and educators in Montana, in serious ways prior to 1945.

This talk
highlights some of the most overlooked and serious artists of their day. Artists that have helped form todays art practice in Montana!
